Abstract

In the present study, a holistic approach, including computational fluid dynamics, physical simulations, plant trials and economics, has been taken up to quantify quality improvements in a multistrand billet caster tundish producing SBQ and OCTG grades. The effects of inert gas shrouding, non - isothermal conditions, and usage of flow control devices (FCD) on billet quality were investigated. Data pertaining to customer complaints were correlated to processing/operating conditions in the plant to obtain proper insights. Finally, an economic analysis was performed to quantify the cost savings in the plant, and also to justify the dollars needed to perform the simulation studies. This type of triangle tied approach is of paramount importance for value creation in steel plants and can be applied to other process areas as well. In this paper only the results pertaining to flow control devices in a tundish are presented.
