DASTUR presented 3 papers, at the recently held 2018 SEAISI Conference held at Jakarta, Indonesia on 25th June 2018. The theme of this year's conference was " ASEAN Steel Industry – Next Leap of Transformation". Keeping in tune with the theme, the papers presented by DASTUR’s speakers emphasized the need of the industry to leverage new-generation Industry 4.0 tools like analytics, big data, artificial intelligence, machine learning to become intelligent, efficient and thus cost effective.
Vice President Abhijit Sarkar's talk on "A New Toolbox to Make Every Plant “Intelligent” highlighted the use of a multidisciplinary 'data + process + operations + economics' approach to transform any plant into an intelligent one!
Operations Lead Tanmoy described how charging hot metal into Electric Arc Furnaces can reduce cost structure and expand grade horizons for mini-mills and essentially allow them to compete with integrated steel plants.
Dr. Saikat Chatterjee presented a couple of innovative ideas following which the age-old problem of phosphorus removal from BOF slags may be resolved. Although their techno-economic feasibility needs to be tested, the ideas hold immense potential for the future.
